But during Covid, the live performance sector suffered one of the worst cultural crises in modern history, with audience attendance falling by over 83% and more than £1 billion lost in box office revenue across venues. Comedy clubs received little meaningful support and were left deeply exposed, revealing just how fragile and undervalued this artform truly is.
Best Joke Wins was created as a non-profit to protect and preserve comedy, strengthen its foundations, and fuel its future. Our mission is to support aspiring and established writers, help comedians grow their craft through daily joke-writing practice, and build a thriving ecosystem that connects fans, clubs, and performers. We’re here to ensure comedy not only survives, but evolves — expanding its reach, nurturing new voices, and reinvesting directly into the scene for generations to come.

Comedy has never had a dedicated support system — and Covid proved how vulnerable the industry truly is. Our Comedy Fund Ecosystem is the first non-profit model designed to give comedy a financial backbone. Every subscription, competition entry, and Ambassador membership helps grow a shared fund that goes straight back into the scene: supporting clubs, rewarding writers, developing new comedians, and strengthening comedy culture city by city.

In this first phase of Best Joke Wins, we are partnering with one club in each city to act as our Comedy Ambassador — the official home of comedy on the platform during our launch. Ambassador Clubs receive exclusive visibility, priority placement in fan discovery tools, and early access to new features that help connect them with writers, emerging talent, and their local community.
This early Ambassador phase is intentionally limited and rewards the first clubs who join us with a leadership position in their city as we build the network from the ground up.
